A stomach ulcer is a sore that develops on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach or small intestine. It occurs when the stomach acid (Hydrochloric acid) damages the lining of the digestive tract. Stomach ulcers are also referred to as PEPTIC ULCER and it has two types, which are:

  • Gastric ulcer: Occurs inside the stomach lining

The symptoms include:

  • Burning stomach pain,
  • Heartburn,
  • Nausea,
  • Intolerance to fatty food,
  • Feeling of fullness, bloating or belching…..etcetera

If untreated, complications like internal bleeding, perforation, obstruction and gastric cancer may occur.
In life, choices are presented to us, but it is left to us to pick the one that is suitable for the situation at hand. In the course of managing or treating an individual with ulcer, the attending physician prescribes the necessary drugs that are needed to help manage the condition and reduce the pain alongside a diet regimen.

According to the American College of Gastroenterology, there is no specific diet regimen a person with ulcer needs to follow but food choices help reduce the symptoms or pain experienced in addition to the prescribed drug used. Basically, an ulcer diet helps reduce the burning pain and irritation that comes from the ulcer alongside the prescribed medication.

To help reduce the symptoms experienced with individuals who have ulcer, there are some foods to avoid or limit and they include:

  • Beverages such as whole or chocolate milk, hot cocoa or cola, beverage with caffeine, regular or decaffeinated coffee, peppermint and spearmint tea
  • Spices and seasonings such as chilli powder, nutmeg, mustard seed, black and red pepper
  • Alcohol
  • Red meat, processed meat
  • Salty and fatty foods….etcetera

As the food listed above is to be limited or avoided completely, there are some food that one can eat to help with the healing process of the sore or ulcer.

They include:

  • Fruits such as apples, grapes, berries
  • Vegetables such as bell pepper, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot,…etcetera
  • Whole grains such as whole-wheat bread, pasta, cereal, and brown rice
  • Fat-free or low-fat dairy foods
  • Decaffeinated green tea, garlic, turmeric, honey,…etcetera

It has been discovered that most of the food listed above are high in antioxidants which help build the body immune system and fight infections thereby inhibiting the growth of Helicobacter pylori bacteria that causes ulcer and decrease inflammation.Best Diet For Ulcer

Also, Broccoli and yogurt have been seen to help out in the treatment and management of ulcers. Broccoli has antibacterial properties called sulforaphane which help relieve or prevent ulcer and the risk of stomach cancer. In the course of consuming this food of diet, an individual with ulcer must ensure he or she does the following:

  • Does not eat before bedtime
  • Eats small but frequent meals
  • Make use of prescribed antacids and antibiotics.

The consumption of this diet helps to:

  • promote healing by providing protein and other essential nutrients,
  • avoid irritation to the stomach or duodenal lining,
  • limit excess acid production,
  • correct nutritional deficiencies that may be contributing to the symptoms,
  • Helps control related conditions like Crohn’s disease, celiac disease or bacterial infection.

It has been said that there are no strict rule or guideline on the choice of food but it pays to avoid certain food substances as mentioned above and incorporate other beneficial food substance that would aid the healing process. Just like Joseph Pilates said, ‘Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness’.
